Feb 25 Service Day at Wagner Hills

    Feb 13, 2018 | by Brad Sumner

On Sunday, Feb 25, Jericho is taking our entire Sunday a.m. gathering off-site to the Wagner Hills Women’s Campus in South Langley (460 - 216 Street). We'll begin our morning at 10:30 a.m. with worship, participate in various service projects around the property from 11-noon, and finish up with a potluck lunch with the residents from noon-1 p.m.

Here's what you need to know about this weekend...

    1) Why are we moving our morning gathering off-site?
At Jericho Ridge, we believe that joyful service is an important part of holistic growth in following Jesus. As leadership, we are actively looking for venues to help all of us use our time, talents and treasures for Kingdom growth and impact both globally and locally. This often happens through partnerships, such as the one we are intentionally cultivating with the Wagner Hills’ Women’s Campus (Formerly known as House of Hope). Our desire is to expose more than just a few people at Jericho to these partners so we are capturing a time of the week that people already have blocked out and simply moving the location and style and focus of the morning.

    2) Who are We Doing This With?
Wagner Hills is a Christian organization that offers residential care, recovery & counseling for men and women in need of healing from brokenness and addictive life styles. Jericho began serving at the Women’s Campus several years ago and one of the reasons we value this partnership is that when we come on-site to serve, we are doing things WITH the residents not just FOR them. Rest assured, the residents are safe people for your kids to be with and the staff are people we respect for their integrity and Holy Spirit sensitivity.

    3) Who Should Come?
Many people are reaching out and inviting friends and neighbours or co-workers to join them who have a heart to serve but sometimes lack local places to do so or who do not usually go to a church on Sundays. Why not use the Facebook post and graphic or the postcard we printed up to do that?

The building is also designed with accessibility in mind so all mobility levels will find it easy (less stairs to climb than at the Events Centre - hooray!)

    4) What Specifically Are We Doing?
Depending on the weather, we'll be serving in very practical ways around the property. Things like...

    • Spring cleaning in the main building (washing windows; vacuuming; maybe some painting, etc...)
    • Weather permitting, there's always lots of yard work (bring your rake and join the grounds crew).
    • Moving furniture and organizing storage.
    • Help provide childcare for our youngest kids (up to age 2).
    • Help set up the lunch hall to feed 150 people.

There are lots of options for all ages and mobility levels both indoor and out and their team will provide all the tools and training necessary.

    5) What About Young Kids?
We'll be providing childcare for children up to age 2 in the main building. Children 3 years and older than that will be wonderfully helpful on the various projects. We encourage you to serve as a family!

    6) What Do I Need To Bring?
The Wagner Hills team is providing the main protein (i.e. hot dogs) item. Be sure to bring your potluck item -  Last names A-H please bring a fruit or veggie tray, last names I-R bring a salad and last names S-Z bring a dessert. Everyone wear work clothes (old clothes, boots, gloves, etc.) as it is a working farm.

    7) What's The Schedule?
We'll begin our morning at 10:30 a.m. with worship in song by Jared & Ruth Ellen and testimonials of life change by some of the Wagner Hills residents.  Then we’ll spread out and participate in various service projects around the property from 11-12 and finish with a potluck lunch with the men’s and women’s residents at noon.

Be sure to allow yourself extra drive time down 216th to 4th Ave as it takes longer than you think if you obey the speed limit. We will be there rain or shine or snow!
